Reedmaking Class
This course is designed to help oboists achieve systematic mastery of reed making through a combination of knowledge internalization, skill refinement, and the development of critical thinking, informed intuition, and efficient working habits. Students will cultivate patience, focus, and consistency as they learn the art and science of crafting reeds that meet their performance needs.
Throughout their degree, students will progress through the various stages of reed making, from selecting cane to finishing reeds, while mastering the use and maintenance of essential tools and equipment. The course emphasizes a step-by-step approach, ensuring students develop a reliable, repeatable method tailored to their unique playing requirements.


Class Format

Classes will feature a variety of formats, including lectures, demonstrations, discussions, video resources, interactive projects, team assignments, and individual feedback. Students will also participate in benchmark reed-making exams to measure progress at each stage. To enhance learning and accountability, students will maintain a detailed reed journal and log to track their progress. Inexperienced reed makers will be paired with more advanced students for additional guidance outside class and private lessons.
